Boys Varsity Baseball Gets Win in Slugfest

The wind was a huge factor in Thursday’s Varsity Baseball DAC matchup up between the Merrillville Pirates and the Portage Indians.  The Indians ended up with a 17-15 victory!  The wild game took extra-inning to complete.  Gabe Acevado had a terrific day at the plate going 4-4 with a home run.  At one point the Pirates had a 5-run lead, which evaporated.  Then, Portage grabbed a 5-run advantage, but the Pirates made a nice comeback to get back into the game.  However, a pair of runs in the 8th game the Indians the victory.  Tommy Mosley, Sam Puchalski, and Jeremy Sinkus all had 3 RBIs.  Tony Cheky went 4-5 and Mike Brunner was 3-6.  Another offensive star was Ivan Martinez, who launched a home run.  The Indians biggest inning was their 7-run 4th. 

JV Baseball Winners Also Well

The Indians Jr. Varsity team won their game in more conventional fashion by a score of 7-6.  The Indians improved to 10-7, 4-2 in Duneland Athletic Conference action.  Andrew Brown and Chris Bruno each went deep in the win.  Bruno was 3-3 on the night. 

Varsity Softball Scores 14 Runs of Their Own

Although they were outscored by their varsity baseball counterparts, the Portage High School Girls’ Varsity Softball team got a nice win over Merrillville on Thursday.  The Indians put together an amazing second inning in which they scored 9 times.  Merrillvile was down by ten as late as the 5th inning, but they climbed back into it before Portage put the game away with three 9th inning tallies.  In addition to the wind, sloppy defense was also a factor that helped lead to the offensive outburst.  The two clubs committed an outragous total of 11 errors on the night.  Seven of the miscues belonged to the Pirates.  Dani Bryan and Shelby Meints both launched home runs.  Meints also had a double and drove in three.  Kylie Someson was the winning pitcher for Portage.  The Indians improve to 11-4, 7-2 in DAC play. 

JV Softball Gets in on the Act

The Jr. Varsity lady-Indians also made the trip to Merrillville on the Thursday night.  They came away with a 12-2 stomping of the Pirates.  Starting pitcher Heather Zengler gave up only 3 hits in her third victory of the season on the mound.  Brittany Adams, Katie Peksenak, and Jena Alaniz each had 2 hits.  Peksenak racked up four runs batted in. 

Chesterton Moves to 9-1 With Tennis Win

The Chesterton Trojans beat the Indians in a Duneland Athletic Conference Girls’ Varsity Tennis matchup on Thursday night.  Carly Bermes suffered her first loss of the season in No. 1 singles.  She fell 6-3 and 6-1 to Bobbi Modesto.  The Trojans are now 9-1, 3-0 in DAC action while the Indians drop to 9-4 overall but just 1-2 in the DAC.  The Jr. Varsity match tied 4-4.
